Das Justizministerium hat gerade eine Bombe platzen lassen: Von China staatlich unterstützte Hacker befanden sich jahrelang in einigen der sensibelsten Netzwerke Amerikas.

Washington hat am Mittwoch offiziell eine chinesische Hacking-Operation unterbunden, die in das Justizministerium, die NASA, die Federal Reserve und sogar in den Senat eingedrungen war. Das Justizministerium beschlagnahmte Domains, die mit zwei Hacking-Tools – QScan und QTRouter – verknüpft sind, die hinter den Angriffen standen.

Eine eidesstattliche Erklärung des FBI nennt das Energieministerium, das Ministerium für Gesundheit und Soziale Dienste, die National Institutes of Health sowie vier US-amerikanische und südkoreanische Unternehmen als Opfer. Die Hacker hatten es seit 2018 weltweit auf kritische Infrastrukturen und sensible Netzwerke abgesehen.

Einige Versuche scheiterten. Im August 2019 versuchten sie, über eine VPN-Schwachstelle in die NASA einzudringen, scheiterten jedoch. Bis September 2024 waren sie bei drei Labors des Energieministeriums, den NIH und einem US-amerikanischen Hersteller von Sicherheitsgeräten erfolgreich.

Im Mai 2024 stahlen sie Daten von Rüstungsunternehmen, Finanzfirmen und Universitäten. Erst letzten Monat suchten sie nach Schwachstellen im US-Senat und in einem Krankenhaus, obwohl auch diese Versuche scheiterten.

Nach Angaben des Justizministeriums betrieb ein chinesisches Unternehmen namens Nanjing Xinjiuwei Network Technology die Plattformen, zu dessen Kunden auch der chinesische Geheimdienst und das Militär gehören. Das Unternehmen reagierte nicht auf Bitten um eine Stellungnahme.

Chinas Botschaft wies die Vorwürfe zurück, erklärte, sie lehne Cyberangriffe ab, und warf den USA vor, Cybersicherheit zu nutzen, um China zu verleumden.
