Der Tanker lief am 30. Juni in der Nähe einer Insel in einem omanischen Meeresschutzgebiet auf Grund. Das Gebiet ist die Heimat von Buckelwalen des Arabischen Meeres und Sokotrascharben.

Nach Angaben des Ölpest-Spezialisten John Amos hat sich der Teppich inzwischen auf mehr als 2.000 km² ausgebreitet, nachdem er von etwa 45 km² Ende Juli auf 600 km² bis Anfang August angewachsen war.

Die omanische Umweltbehörde teilte mit, dass bis zu 40 km der Küste nahe Ras Madraka und der Insel Masirah betroffen sein könnten.

Der 25 Jahre alte Tanker, der schätzungsweise 800.000 Barrel russisches Öl transportierte, steht unter internationalen Sanktionen und verfügt über keine anerkannte westliche Versicherung.
