El Banco de Japón (BOJ) subió el martes los tipos de interés a su nivel más alto en 31 años, elevando su tipo de referencia del 0,75% al 1%. La medida era ampliamente esperada y marca un paso más de distanciamiento de las políticas ultralaxas que definieron la economía de Japón durante décadas.

La decisión se produce en un momento en que las autoridades se centran en las presiones inflacionistas alimentadas por el aumento de los costes de la energía tras el conflicto de Irán, incluso después de que el reciente acuerdo de paz entre EE. El BOJ votó 7-1 a favor de elevar su tipo de interés a corto plazo al 1%, el nivel más alto desde 1995. El subgobernador Shinichi Uchida dirigió la rueda de prensa posterior a la reunión, mientras que el gobernador Kazuo Ueda se ausentó de la misma por motivos médicos.

El banco central declaró que los riesgos para el crecimiento económico derivados del conflicto de Oriente Próximo han disminuido gracias a las fuentes de energía alternativas. Las acciones japonesas acogieron con satisfacción la decisión. El Nikkei 225 subió hasta un 1%, marcando un nuevo récord por encima de los 70.000 puntos.

El yen se fortaleció inicialmente tras el anuncio, pero después se debilitó hasta los 160,29 por dólar estadounidense, manteniéndose cerca de niveles que podrían desencadenar una intervención oficial en el mercado de divisas.

Los analistas indicaron que los inversores se sintieron aliviados por el hecho de que el BOJ no debatiera una subida mayor, de 50 puntos básicos, lo que refuerza las expectativas de que las futuras alzas sigan siendo graduales.
