Bolsonaro’s 47% Shock: Why Brazil Markets Could Explode Higher

At a Glance

  • Flavio Bolsonaro won 47% in Brazil’s first-round presidential vote, ahead of Lula’s 45%.

  • Overseas-traded Brazil assets surged, with the MSCI Brazil ETF jumping more than 16%.

  • Analysts expect stocks, bonds and the real to rally when Brazilian markets reopen.

  • The runoff between Bolsonaro and Lula is set for later this month.

Bolsonaro’s stronger-than-expected first-round result has investors betting on a more market-friendly outcome.

Brazilian assets are heading into Monday’s session with investors expecting a sharp rally after Flavio Bolsonaro unexpectedly took the lead in Sunday’s presidential election first round.

The right-wing senator beat polling expectations and will face President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in a runoff later this month.

KEY DETAILS

Bolsonaro won 47% of the vote, while Lula secured about 45%. Polls had expected Lula to lead by roughly three percentage points.

With Brazilian markets closed, overseas trading offered an early signal. The Frankfurt-listed MSCI Brazil ETF jumped more than 16%, while shares of Brazilian companies including Itaú Unibanco and Petrobras also rose.

Brazilian international debt gained as well. The 2056 bond climbed 1.4 cents to 93.5 cents on the dollar, according to Tradeweb data.

Bolsonaro has presented himself as a more moderate version of his father, former President Jair Bolsonaro, promising tighter public spending, privatizations and lower taxes.

MARKET REACTION

Analysts expect the real, trading around 5.22 per dollar, to strengthen. Societe Generale sees it reaching 5.10 by year-end, with scope to move below 5.00 in the first half of 2027.

Some analysts see the dollar falling 2%–4%, equities rising 4%–6%, and both nominal and real interest rates tightening.

WHY IT MATTERS

Markets appear to be pricing in the possibility of political change and tighter fiscal policy. But investors will want clearer evidence that Bolsonaro can deliver on those promises.

The runoff now becomes the key market catalyst. Investors will be watching campaign signals, fiscal plans, and any signs of political interference as Brazil heads toward the final vote.
