Il raro intervento congiunto ha spinto lo yen nettamente al rialzo e ha rafforzato le aspettative che la banca centrale del Giappone possa aumentare i tassi d'interesse già a settembre.

Il Giappone e gli Stati Uniti hanno confermato ufficialmente di aver effettuato un intervento coordinato per sostenere lo yen giapponese, segnando la prima operazione valutaria congiunta tra i due paesi dal 2011. I funzionari hanno anche chiarito di essere pronti a intervenire nuovamente se le condizioni di mercato lo richiederanno.

La mossa arriva dopo che lo yen è sceso al livello più basso degli ultimi 40 anni, sollevando preoccupazioni sulla stabilità finanziaria e sull'inflazione in Giappone.

Il Ministero delle Finanze del Giappone ha dichiarato lunedì che l'intervento congiunto di acquisto di yen di venerdì con il Tesoro statunitense era finalizzato a calmare l'eccessiva volatilità e i movimenti disordinati sul mercato valutario.

Il Ministro delle Finanze Satsuki Katayama ha affermato che le autorità "non esiteranno" a effettuare ulteriori interventi coordinati se necessario. Il Presidente Donald Trump ha dichiarato che gli Stati Uniti stanno sostenendo il Giappone come gesto di amicizia e per contribuire a proteggere l'economia globale.

L'annuncio ha spinto lo yen al rialzo di oltre l'1% a 155,20 per dollaro USA, il suo livello più forte dall'inizio di maggio. La valuta era scesa a quasi 164 per dollaro il mese scorso, il livello più basso degli ultimi quattro decenni.

Il principale funzionario valutario del Giappone, Atsushi Mimura, ha dichiarato che il governo continuerà a coordinarsi strettamente con la Banca del Giappone (BOJ) sulla politica valutaria.

Anche il Segretario del Tesoro statunitense Scott Bessent ha confermato la partecipazione di Washington e ha affermato che gli Stati Uniti sarebbero disposti a unirsi a futuri interventi. Ha nuovamente incoraggiato la BOJ a continuare ad aumentare i tassi d'interesse.

L'azione coordinata ha aumentato le aspettative del mercato sul fatto che la BOJ possa deliberare un altro aumento dei tassi nella riunione di politica monetaria di settembre, dopo aver lasciato i tassi invariati la scorsa settimana pur segnalando spazio per un ulteriore inasprimento.

Riflettendo tali aspettative, il rendimento dei titoli di stato giapponesi a due anni è salito brevemente all'1,545%, il livello più alto dal 1995.

Il Giappone lotta da mesi per frenare il declino dello yen, che ha spinto al rialzo i costi di importazione, alimentato l'inflazione e pesato sulla spesa delle famiglie. I precedenti interventi solitari e l'aumento dei tassi di giugno da parte della BOJ all'1%, il più alto degli ultimi 31 anni, non sono riusciti a fornire un sostegno duraturo alla valuta.

Prima dell'intervento confermato di venerdì, i dati della BOJ suggerivano che il Giappone potrebbe aver speso fino a 58,97 miliardi di dollari per acquistare yen nelle contrattazioni di New York di giovedì.

Bessent ha anche affermato che gli Stati Uniti stanno valutando l'espansione della facility di riacquisto della Federal Reserve, che fornisce liquidità temporanea in dollari. Lo strumento potrebbe aiutare il Giappone ad accedere ai dollari senza vendere i titoli del Tesoro statunitense in portafoglio, rendendo più facile il finanziamento di futuri interventi.
