Il piano del presidente Donald Trump di porre fine alla dipendenza degli Stati Uniti dai minerali critici cinesi entro il 1° gennaio 2027 si scontra con un ostacolo importante: l'industria nazionale non è pronta. L'obiettivo è sostituire le importazioni di terre rare, magneti, tungsteno, molibdeno e tantalio provenienti da Cina, Russia, Iran e Corea del Nord.

Tuttavia, i leader del settore affermano che è improbabile che la scadenza venga rispettata. Nel 2025, gli Stati Uniti avevano bisogno di circa 48.000 tonnellate metriche dei magneti in terre rare più comuni, a fronte di una produzione interna che ne ha fornite solo 300. Si prevede che la capacità raggiungerà circa 5.000 tonnellate metriche entro la fine di quest'anno.

Diversi grandi progetti sono ancora lontani anni. MP Materials prevede le prime consegne di magneti a General Motors nel corso di quest'anno, mentre l'entrata in funzione di impianti finanziati dal Pentagono e di altri progetti di raffinazione è prevista tra il 2027 e il 2030.

L'amministrazione Trump ha anche lanciato il Project Vault, un programma da 12 miliardi di dollari per accumulare scorte di minerali critici, con i funzionari che riconoscono che i primi acquisti potrebbero ancora includere materiale proveniente dalla Cina.
