AI’s Infrastructure Race Goes Global

The race to build the infrastructure behind advanced AI models is moving deeper into Asia and South America, as companies chase reliable power, land and data-centre capacity.

Key Details

Australia’s Firmus has signed a multi-year agreement with OpenAI to supply computing capacity from two Malaysian data centres. The deal makes OpenAI an anchor customer as demand for AI infrastructure accelerates.

Firmus, backed by Nvidia, Jane Street, Blackstone funds and Coatue Management, was valued at above $10.5 billion in its latest funding round. Its portfolio includes two operating data centres in Australia and Singapore, with five more under development across Asia-Pacific.

Malaysia is Southeast Asia’s fastest-growing data-centre market, although rising electricity and water use is drawing scrutiny.

Meanwhile, Argentina’s Patagonia is emerging as another potential AI hub. Pampa Energia is seeking investors for a facility near its Loma de la Lata power plant, potentially consuming up to 500 MW from Vaca Muerta shale gas.

Why It Matters

For traders, the expansion points to growing demand across data centres, electricity, semiconductors, energy and infrastructure. Nvidia’s planned deployment of next-generation Vera Rubin processors across Asia-Pacific also adds weight to the trend.

Investors will watch whether these projects move from plans and contracts into large-scale construction, particularly as infrastructure and connectivity remain major hurdles in Argentina.
