Anthropic vs. Alibaba: A 28.8-Million-Message AI Extraction Scandal

โดย

The allegations add fresh tension to the growing technological rivalry between the United States and China.

Anthropic has accused Chinese tech giant Alibaba of carrying out what it describes as the largest known attempt to extract capabilities from its Claude AI models.

According to a letter reviewed by Reuters, Anthropic claims the campaign ran from April 22 to June 5, 2026, generating more than 28.8 million interactions with Claude through nearly 25,000 fraudulent accounts.

Key Details

Anthropic says the operation involved a technique known as “distillation,” where a less advanced AI model is trained using responses from a more capable one.

The company alleges the effort was linked to operators associated with Alibaba and its AI research division, Qwen. Anthropic claims the goal was to accelerate access to capabilities found in its advanced Mythos Preview models.

The letter was sent on June 10 to U.S. Senators Tim Scott and Elizabeth Warren ahead of a Senate Banking Committee hearing focused on artificial intelligence.

Anthropic also pointed to previous alleged extraction campaigns involving Chinese AI firms, including DeepSeek, which it said generated over 150,000 exchanges, while Moonshot AI exceeded 3.4 million and MiniMax surpassed 13 million.

The accusations come as Washington increases scrutiny of China's access to advanced AI technologies. Earlier this month, Alibaba was added to the Pentagon’s list of Chinese military companies, a designation the company is contesting.

Market Reaction

The allegations are likely to intensify concerns surrounding AI intellectual property protection and cross-border technology competition. Investors will be watching for any response from Alibaba, regulatory developments, and potential impacts on AI-related stocks.

Why It Matters

For traders, the dispute highlights the growing geopolitical risks surrounding the AI sector. Regulatory actions, export controls, and technology restrictions can quickly influence sentiment across technology, semiconductor, and broader equity markets.

Attention now turns to Alibaba’s response, potential U.S. policy measures, and whether further evidence emerges regarding the alleged campaign. The case could become another flashpoint in the global race for AI leadership.
