Oman’s Massive Oil Spill Is Spreading Fast, And the Worst May Be Yet to Come

โดย

At a Glance

  • Oil slick has expanded to more than 2,000 sq. km

  • Up to 40 km of Oman's coastline could be affected

  • Tanker was carrying around 800,000 barrels of Russian oil

  • Cleanup funding is complicated by the incident being treated as an “act of war”

  • Worst-case estimates put the spill at 40–50 million gallons

A growing oil slick off Oman is raising environmental concerns while war-related restrictions make the response harder.

A massive oil spill from the tanker Caroline Bezengi has reached Oman's coastline, with the slick expanding sharply in recent weeks. Environmental specialists warn that the damaged vessel could release much more oil if salvage efforts remain delayed.

Key Details

The tanker ran aground on June 30 near an island within an Omani marine reserve. The area is home to Arabian Sea humpback whales and Socotra cormorants.

The slick has now spread across more than 2,000 sq. km, according to oil spill specialist John Amos, after growing from about 45 sq. km at the end of July to 600 sq. km by early August.

Oman's environment agency said up to 40 km of coastline near Ras Madraka and Masirah Island could be affected.

The 25-year-old tanker, which was carrying an estimated 800,000 barrels of Russian oil, is under international sanctions and has no recognised Western insurance.

Market Reaction

The scale of the spill could add pressure to oil markets if salvage operations fail and a larger release disrupts regional shipping or supply routes.

For traders, developments around the tanker, regional shipping and crude supply could influence WTI and Brent oil prices, particularly if the spill affects transport through the region.

The key watchpoints are salvage efforts, the size of the slick, and whether the tanker can be stabilised before more crude escapes.
