The War Just Hit Your Shopping Cart: Ukraine Strikes Russia's Biggest Retailer

โดย

The strikes bring the war closer to Russia's consumer economy, raising risks for businesses, shoppers, and supply chains.

Ukraine has stepped up its drone campaign by targeting warehouses belonging to Wildberries, Russia's largest online retailer. The attacks highlight a broader strategy aimed at disrupting logistics inside Russia while increasing pressure on its wartime economy.

KEY DETAILS

Ukraine struck four Wildberries warehouses over the past week, according to Reuters. The company processes around 20 million orders every day across warehouses covering 3 million square metres.

Often called "Russia's Amazon," Wildberries is a major part of the country's economy alongside rival Ozon. Together with smaller competitors, online marketplaces account for goods and services worth about 8.5% of Russia's GDP and support 4 million jobs, representing more than 5% of the workforce.

Wildberries was founded in 2004 by Tatyana Kim and her former husband Vladislav Bakalchuk. Forbes estimates Kim's net worth at $7 billion, making her Russia's richest woman. The company is also building a 400-metre headquarters in Moscow that is expected to become the city's tallest building by 2030.

President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said the latest targets were logistics hubs linked to supplying Russian forces with drone components and other equipment. Kim responded that the strikes had hit ordinary people simply doing their jobs.

WHY IT MATTERS

For traders, the strikes show how the conflict is increasingly targeting commercial infrastructure, creating fresh uncertainty around Russia's economy and logistics sector.

Markets will be watching whether attacks on key logistics hubs continue and if they begin to disrupt Russia's retail industry or trigger a broader economic response.
