The U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) is using Anthropic’s AI model, Mythos, to scan government software for security weaknesses, according to three people familiar with the project.
The effort reflects increasing confidence in AI tools to strengthen cyber defenses as digital threats continue to rise.

Sources said CISA’s Attack Surface Evaluation team is using Mythos to review government code repositories for vulnerabilities that could be exploited by hackers or foreign intelligence agencies.
Two of the sources said the AI-assisted audits have already uncovered a large number of security flaws, although Reuters could not verify how much code has been reviewed or how serious the vulnerabilities are.
The development comes after a turbulent period for Anthropic. Earlier this year, the company faced a U.S. government supply-chain risk designation following disagreements over AI safety restrictions. A judge later blocked the designation, and relations have since improved.
Reports also indicate the National Security Agency has been using Mythos since April, even while the blacklist was still in place. Anthropic, CISA, the NSA, and the White House have not provided further comment.
