India Could Become Adyen’s Next Major Growth Engine

Dutch payments giant Adyen is expanding in India, hiring more staff as it looks to capture the country’s booming digital payments market and growing cross-border trade.

The Amsterdam-listed fintech sees long-term potential as global companies enter India and Indian businesses expand overseas, Asia-Pacific President Gary Yang told Reuters.

Key Details

Adyen has steadily built its India business since securing payment aggregator and cross-border licences in 2024. Its local workforce reached 120 in the first half of 2026, up tenfold from 2023.

India pre-tax income more than doubled to €3.18 million ($3.5 million) in 2025, from €1.45 million a year earlier. Globally, Adyen reported €1.06 billion ($1.23 billion) in net income for 2025.

The company serves major clients including Uber and Microsoft and is working with Adobe on its Indian payments offering. It is also helping Indian travel platform Oyo expand internationally.

Market Reaction

Adyen faces a competitive and heavily regulated market. Stripe scaled back its Indian operations in 2024, while PayPal exited domestic payments in 2021 and now focuses on cross-border transactions.

UPI is central to Adyen’s India plans. The company is also preparing for “agentic commerce,” where AI agents could search for products and complete purchases for consumers.

What to Watch

India’s evolving payments rules, UPI developments, and the rollout of AI-driven payments could determine how quickly Adyen’s local expansion pays off.
