Washington gains preferential access to Venezuelan oil production
The deal gives U.S. companies a major foothold in Venezuela’s oil industry while pushing Chinese and Russian interests aside.
A U.S.-backed oil company is set to take control of several Venezuelan oilfields previously operated by Chinese and Russian firms, according to two U.S. officials. The move is part of a much broader oil agreement announced by President Donald Trump as Washington looks to reshape Venezuela’s energy sector.
KEY DETAILS
North American Blue Energy Partners (NABEP) has been awarded 14 new contracts by Venezuela and is expected to control 17 projects in total.
Five of the 14 fields were previously operated by Chinese companies, while one was run by a Russian firm. The projects include assets linked to China Concord Resources, Sinopec and China National Petroleum Corp.
NABEP was previously owned by U.S. oil tycoon Harry Sargeant and is now controlled by Venezuelan businessman Alejandro Betancourt.
The U.S. government will hold rights to a 35% stake in NABEP and receive preferential access to 20% of the company’s production at cost. The State Department also has first refusal on the remaining 80%.
Trump said the U.S. had secured access to around 64 billion barrels of Venezuela’s proven oil reserves through a private-sector partnership.
WHY IT MATTERS
Trump said millions of barrels are already being shipped to refineries in Texas and Louisiana, with oil industry meetings planned for Tuesday.
The deal could redirect Venezuelan oil flows toward the U.S. while reducing China’s and Russia’s influence over one of the world’s largest oil reserves.
Traders will be watching how quickly the new projects ramp up production, where the oil flows, and how the deal affects U.S.-Venezuela energy relations.
