Anthropic gibt an, dass bei der Operation eine Methode namens „Destillation“ zum Einsatz kam, bei der ein weniger fortgeschrittenes KI-Modell anhand der Antworten eines leistungsfähigeren Modells trainiert wird.

Das Unternehmen behauptet, die Aktion stehe im Zusammenhang mit Akteuren, die mit Alibaba und dessen KI-Forschungsabteilung Qwen in Verbindung stehen. Anthropic vermutet, das Ziel sei es gewesen, den Zugriff auf Fähigkeiten zu beschleunigen, die in seinen fortschrittlichen Mythos Preview-Modellen zu finden sind.

Das Schreiben wurde am 10. Juni an die US-Senatoren Tim Scott und Elizabeth Warren im Vorfeld einer Anhörung des Bankenausschusses des Senats zum Thema künstliche Intelligenz geschickt.

Anthropic wies auch auf frühere angebliche Extraktionskampagnen hin, an denen chinesische KI-Unternehmen beteiligt waren.
