Japan und die Vereinigten Staaten haben offiziell bestätigt, dass sie eine koordinierte Intervention zur Unterstützung des japanischen Yens durchgeführt haben. Dies ist die erste gemeinsame Währungsoperation der beiden Länder seit 2011. Beamte machten zudem deutlich, dass sie bereit sind, erneut einzugreifen, falls die Marktbedingungen dies erfordern.

Der Schritt erfolgt, nachdem der Yen auf seinen schwächsten Stand seit 40 Jahren gefallen war, was Sorgen über die Finanzstabilität und die Inflation in Japan schürte.

Das japanische Finanzministerium teilte am Montag mit, dass die gemeinsame Yen-Kauf-Intervention mit dem US-Finanzministerium am Freitag darauf abzielte, übermäßige Volatilität und ungeordnete Bewegungen am Devisenmarkt zu beruhigen.

Finanzministerin Satsuki Katayama sagte, die Behörden würden „nicht zögern“, bei Bedarf weitere koordinierte Interventionen durchzuführen. Präsident Donald Trump erklärte, die Vereinigten Staaten unterstützten Japan als Geste der Freundschaft und um zum Schutz der Weltwirtschaft beizutragen.

Die Ankündigung ließ den Yen um mehr als 1 % auf 155,20 pro US-Dollar steigen, den stärksten Stand seit Anfang Mai. Die Währung war im vergangenen Monat auf fast 164 pro Dollar gefallen, den schwächsten Stand seit vier Jahrzehnten.

Japans oberster Währungsbeamter, Atsushi Mimura, sagte, die Regierung werde sich in der Währungspolitik weiterhin eng mit der Bank of Japan (BOJ) abstimmen.

Auch US-Finanzminister Scott Bessent bestätigte die Beteiligung Washingtons und erklärte, die Vereinigten Staaten seien bereit, sich an künftigen Interventionen zu beteiligen. Er ermutigte die BOJ erneut, die Zinsen weiter anzuheben.

Die koordinierte Aktion hat die Markterwartungen erhöht, dass die BOJ auf ihrer geldpolitischen Sitzung im September eine weitere Zinserhöhung beschließen könnte, nachdem sie die Zinsen in der vergangenen Woche unverändert gelassen und gleichzeitig signalisiert hatte, dass Spielraum für eine weitere Straffung besteht.

Diese Erwartungen widerspiegelnd kletterte die Rendite der zweijährigen japanischen Staatsanleihen kurzzeitig auf 1,545 %, den höchsten Stand seit 1995.

Japan kämpft seit Monaten gegen den Verfall des Yen, der die Importkosten in die Höhe getrieben, die Inflation angeheizt und die Konsumausgaben der privaten Haushalte belastet hat. Frühere Alleingänge und die Zinserhöhung der BOJ im Juni auf 1 %, den höchsten Stand seit 31 Jahren, konnten der Währung keine dauerhafte Unterstützung bieten.

Vor der bestätigten Intervention am Freitag deuteten Daten der BOJ darauf hin, dass Japan im New Yorker Handel am Donnerstag bis zu 58,97 Milliarden Dollar für den Kauf von Yen ausgegeben haben könnte.

Bessent sagte auch, dass die Vereinigten Staaten erwägen, die Repofazilität der Federal Reserve auszuweiten, die vorübergehende Dollar-Liquidität bereitstellt. Die Fazilität könnte Japan helfen, an Dollar zu gelangen, ohne US-Staatsanleihen verkaufen zu müssen, was die Finanzierung künftiger Interventionen erleichtern würde.

Die Devisenmärkte reagierten prompt, und der Yen verzeichnete den stärksten Zuwachs seit Monaten. Auch die Rentenmärkte legten zu, da Händler verstärkt auf eine Zinserhöhung der BOJ im September setzten, was die Renditen kurzfristiger japanischer Staatsanleihen auf ein seit drei Jahrzehnten nicht mehr gesehenes Niveau trieb.
