Im Gespräch mit Reportern an Bord der Air Force One am Sonntag sagte Trump, die Verhandlungen würden am Montagnachmittag beginnen, nannte jedoch weder die Teilnehmer noch den Ort.

Seine Äußerungen folgten auf einen Post bei Truth Social am Samstag, in dem er erklärte, der Iran und andere Länder des Nahen Ostens hätten um mehr Zeit gebeten, um ein Abkommen abzuschließen, das zur sofortigen Wiedereröffnung der Straße von Hormus führen und die Bedenken hinsichtlich des iranischen Atomprogramms ausräumen würde. Trump forderte Teheran zudem auf, „schnell einen DEAL“ zu machen.

Auf die Frage, ob der Iran eine Frist für eine Einigung zu erwarten habe, wich Trump einer direkten Antwort aus.

„Mir wäre ein Deal lieber“, sagte Trump und fügte hinzu, er wolle nicht, dass im Zuge des anhaltenden Konflikts noch mehr Menschen sterben.

Der jüngste diplomatische Vorstoß folgt auf Monate eskalierender Spannungen. Trump hat wiederholt vor weiteren militärischen Maßnahmen gewarnt, gleichzeitig aber auch Verhandlungsbereitschaft signalisiert, obwohl frühere Runden keine umfassende Einigung erbrachten.

Unterdessen führte der iranische Außenminister Abbas Araqchi laut iranischen Staatsmedien separate Telefongespräche mit dem saudi-arabischen Außenminister Prinz Faisal bin Farhan und dem pakistanischen Armeechef Asim Munir, während die regionalen diplomatischen Bemühungen andauerten.

Die offizielle iranische Nachrichtenagentur IRNA berichtete zudem, dass die Verhandlungen mit dem Oman über die Straße von Hormus kurz vor dem Abschluss stünden. Der Sprecher des iranischen Außenministeriums, Esmaeil Baghaei, erklärte jedoch, dass sich diese Gespräche auf eine vorgeschlagene Schifffahrtsroute beziehen und unabhängig von einer Entscheidung über die Wiedereröffnung der Meerenge seien.

Auch Israel signalisierte, dass es den Druck auf Teheran aufrechterhalten werde. Energieminister Eli Cohen erklärte, Israel werde sich weiterhin eng mit den Vereinigten Staaten abstimmen, und warnte, dass eine militärische Option auf dem Tisch bleibe, sollte der Iran sein Nuklear- oder Raketenprogramm wieder aufnehmen.
