Trump hat kritische Mineralien zu einer Priorität der nationalen Sicherheit gemacht und Dutzende Milliarden Dollar an fast 150 US-amerikanische Bergbau- und Verarbeitungsunternehmen geleitet. Ziel ist es, Importe von Seltenen Erden, Magneten, Wolfram, Molybdän und Tantal aus China, Russland, dem Iran und Nordkorea zu ersetzen.

Branchenführer sagen jedoch, dass die Frist voraussichtlich nicht eingehalten werden kann. Im Jahr 2025 benötigten die USA rund 48.000 Tonnen der gängigsten Magnete aus Seltenen Erden, während die inländische Produktion nur 300 Tonnen lieferte. Es wird erwartet, dass die Kapazität bis Ende dieses Jahres rund 5.000 Tonnen erreichen wird.

Mehrere Großprojekte sind noch Jahre entfernt. MP Materials erwartet erste Magnetlieferungen an General Motors im Laufe dieses Jahres, während vom Pentagon unterstützte Anlagen und andere Raffinerieprojekte voraussichtlich zwischen 2027 und 2030 in Betrieb gehen werden.

Die Trump-Administration hat außerdem das Projekt „Vault“ ins Leben gerufen, ein 12-Milliarden-Dollar-Programm zur Bevorratung kritischer Mineralien, wobei Beamte einräumen, dass erste Einkäufe möglicherweise immer noch aus China stammendes Material enthalten könnten.
