Seine Führung half auch dabei, die Wirtschaft durch bedeutende Ereignisse zu steuern, darunter den Börsenkrach von 1987, die asiatische Finanzkrise von 1997, den russischen Staatsbankrott von 1998 und den Zusammenbruch von Long-Term Capital Management.

Nach der Finanzkrise von 2008 litt jedoch Greenspans Ruf. Kritiker argumentierten, dass seine Befürwortung einer lockereren Finanzregulierung und sein Zögern, gegen die Exzesse auf dem Immobilienmarkt vorzugehen, zu den Bedingungen beitrugen, die zum globalen Zusammenbruch führten.

In späteren Jahren räumte Greenspan Fehler in einigen seiner Annahmen über die Finanzmärkte ein und erklärte vor Gesetzgebern im Jahr 2008, er befinde sich angesichts der Krise in einem „Zustand fassungslosen Unglaubens“.
