Euro Under Pressure: How Low Can EUR/USD Go?

At a Glance

  • Euro falls to $1.1219, near its lowest level since May 2025

  • French debt concerns and Spain’s snap election add pressure

  • Dollar climbs as U.S. Treasury yields hit multi-decade highs

  • Traders still expect further Fed tightening despite weaker U.S. jobs data

Political uncertainty and rising borrowing costs across Europe are weighing on the euro as the dollar gains fresh support from higher U.S. yields.

The euro is struggling to find its footing. It slipped to $1.1219 on Tuesday, extending last week’s 1.2% decline as concerns over French debt and political uncertainty in Spain add to pressure on the common currency.

Key Details

The euro hit a 17-month low in the previous session and was last down 0.06% at 84.87 pence. Investors remain focused on France’s high debt levels, political gridlock and rising borrowing costs, while Spain’s upcoming snap election has added another source of uncertainty.

Commonwealth Bank of Australia strategist Joseph Capurso expects the euro to fall below $1.10, citing weak European policy prospects and fiscal concerns.

Market Reaction

The dollar continued its rally, with the dollar index at 102.17 after reaching an 18-month high. U.S. Treasury yields climbed to multi-decade highs, supporting the greenback.

Sterling slipped 0.06% to $1.3216, while the dollar rose 0.18% against the yen to 158.16.

Why It Matters

For FX traders, Europe’s fiscal problems are becoming a bigger driver of euro moves. At the same time, sticky U.S. inflation is keeping expectations for further Fed tightening alive despite weaker jobs data.

Traders will watch European political developments, French borrowing costs, U.S. inflation signals, and the Bank of Japan’s policy outlook for fresh direction.
