Emergency patches released: PHP developers urged users to update immediately.
A critical vulnerability in software powering roughly 75% of identifiable websites has triggered emergency security measures and fears of widespread cyberattacks.
Government agencies and website operators scrambled to protect their systems on Wednesday after developers released urgent fixes for long-hidden vulnerabilities in PHP, a programming language widely used across the internet.
The flaws were discovered with help from AI tools, according to cybersecurity firms Calif and Wiz. Wiz said its research involved its Atlas tool, Google's Gemini 4 Argon and OpenAI's GPT-5.6 Sol.
PHP underpins major platforms including WordPress, Drupal, Joomla and Magento. Researchers warned that AI could make it much easier for attackers to identify and exploit vulnerable servers.
Market and Industry Reaction
The Netherlands' cybersecurity agency, France's Interior Ministry, Danish municipal IT services and Finnish government network services took systems offline as a precaution. Wikipedia and the Internet Archive also reported taking some systems offline.
Amazon said its security team detected an attempted exploit against a decoy system on October 17, followed by further attempts on Wednesday. The company warned that the vulnerabilities were being actively exploited.
Why It Matters
With approximately 1.5 million hosts reportedly running PHP versions without a fix, the incident highlights the growing cybersecurity risks facing businesses and public institutions. Smaller website operators may be especially vulnerable if they lack the resources to patch their systems quickly.
What to Watch Next
The priority is how quickly operators install the fixes and whether attackers exploit unpatched servers on a wider scale. The pace of remediation will help determine how far the disruption spreads.
