AT A GLANCE
U.S. Mint begins selling a Trump $1 commemorative coin
Face value: $1; Mint rolls and bags cost up to $2.44 per coin
250,000 coins carry a special “July 4th” mark
The coin contains zero actual gold
Its design has sparked questions over living presidents on U.S. coins
A New Piece of Trump-Era Americana
The U.S. Mint has started selling a gold-colored $1 coin featuring President Donald Trump as part of the celebrations for America’s 250th anniversary.
The coin is legal tender, but its collector pricing means buyers are already paying well above its $1 face value.
KEY DETAILS
The Mint is selling rolls of 25 coins for $61 and 100-coin bags for $154.50. That works out to roughly $2.44 and $1.55 per coin, respectively. Purchases are initially limited to two of each product per household.
Among them are 250,000 special coins struck at the Philadelphia Mint on July 4. They carry a “July 4th” privy mark and will be randomly placed in rolls and bags.
Trump’s portrait appears on the front alongside “LIBERTY,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” and “1776–2026.” The reverse features the Presidential Seal with “250” on the eagle’s shield.
Despite its gold appearance, the coin contains no gold. It is primarily copper, with 6% zinc, 3.5% manganese and 2% nickel.
The coin has also raised legal questions because Trump is a sitting president. Federal law bars portraits of living people on the reverse of coins issued under the anniversary program. Trump’s portrait is on the obverse, and Treasury and Mint reviews found the design complies with federal law.
