Breaking: Iran Rejects Hormuz Agreement, Raising Fears of New Energy Supply Disruptions

Tehran dismisses Oman's proposal for shared control of the Strait of Hormuz, raising fresh concerns over global energy supplies.

Iran has rejected Oman's proposal for joint regional management of the Strait of Hormuz, ending hopes of easing months of disruption in one of the world's most important shipping routes. The decision came as military tensions across the region intensified, pushing oil prices sharply higher.

KEY DETAILS

A senior Iranian official told Reuters that Tehran has no interest in Oman's proposal, which would have introduced shared management of the Strait of Hormuz with voluntary fees for passing ships. Iran maintains that the inbound route and part of the outbound route must remain under its control.

The official also accused the United States and Saudi Arabia of pressuring Oman to promote what Tehran described as unrealistic plans.

Iran's Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) said they stopped three oil tankers after the vessels allegedly ignored warnings and used what it called an unsafe and illegal route. Reuters could not independently verify the claim.

Meanwhile, the U.S. and Saudi Arabia launched strikes against Iran-backed groups in eastern Iraq, saying they were responsible for drone attacks on Saudi oil facilities. Iran denied involvement and warned that blaming Tehran would be a "major miscalculation."

Oil prices climbed more than $3 per barrel as the latest escalation increased concerns over energy supplies.

WHY IT MATTERS

The Strait of Hormuz handles around 20% of global oil and liquefied natural gas flows under normal conditions. Any disruption can quickly affect global energy prices and broader financial markets.

Investors will closely watch whether diplomatic talks resume or military action continues. The future of the Strait of Hormuz remains a key factor for global markets and energy security.
