At a Glance
Nasdaq plans to offer nearly 23 hours of stock trading a day from December 6.
The new session would run from 9 pm to 4 am ET.
The move still needs SEC approval.
Foreign holdings of US equities reached $17 trillion by mid-2024, up 97% since 2019.
Nasdaq ultimately wants to move toward 24/7 trading.
US Stocks Could Soon Trade Through Most of the Day
Nasdaq is preparing to dramatically extend trading hours, giving investors around the world much more time to trade US-listed stocks. The exchange plans to launch the new overnight session on Sunday, December 6, subject to approval from the US Securities and Exchange Commission.
Key Details
The new session will run from 9 pm to 4 am ET, allowing European investors to trade from roughly 3 am to 10 am CET, before London’s regular market opens.
Nasdaq already offers pre-market trading from 4 am to 9:30 am ET and after-hours trading from 4 pm to 8 pm ET, alongside its core 9:30am-to-4 pm session.
The exchange says the expansion could widen access to global investors. Foreign holdings of US equities reached $17 trillion (€14.6tn) by mid-2024, nearly doubling from 2019.
Market Reaction
The move follows growing demand for around-the-clock markets. Geopolitical events that hit outside US trading hours have pushed investors toward crypto, decentralised platforms and perpetual futures to react in real time.
Nasdaq’s plan also follows NYSE, which has SEC approval for a 22-hour trading day, while Cboe has outlined similar plans.
Why It Matters
Longer hours could give traders more flexibility to respond to overnight news, economic data and geopolitical shocks without waiting for Wall Street to reopen.
Nasdaq’s December launch could be an important step toward its bigger goal: 24/7 stock trading.
