Trump’s latest comments add fresh pressure to stalled Iran talks and raise new concerns over energy supplies through the Strait of Hormuz.
U.S. President Donald Trump said Monday that Iran is unlikely to accept the deal he believes is needed to end the war, insisting that Tehran must not be allowed to obtain a nuclear weapon. His comments came as negotiations remained stalled and tensions around the Strait of Hormuz grew.
KEY DETAILS
Trump said the U.S. was not seeking to extend an interim agreement reached with Iran in June. The memorandum called for an immediate and permanent end to military operations and gave both sides up to 60 days to negotiate a final deal.
That deadline expired Monday.
Trump also told Fox News that Iran “should put up the white flag of surrender.” Earlier, he repeated on Truth Social that preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon remains his “number one Goal.”
Separately, Oman and Iran have been working toward restoring commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. Trump warned that the U.S. could bomb Oman if it interfered with those efforts.
MARKET REACTION
The dispute has already pushed fuel prices higher and increased pressure on global energy markets. Before the U.S.-Israeli attacks on Iran began in late February, the Strait carried around 20% of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas supplies.
WHY IT MATTERS
Any further disruption around the Strait could create fresh volatility across oil, gas and broader financial markets, keeping geopolitical risk firmly on traders’ radar.
Markets will watch closely for signs of renewed Iran-U.S. negotiations, developments around the Strait of Hormuz and any further escalation involving Oman.
